Gary Fixter: Originally called the United States Interregional Women's League, the USL W-League was founded in 1996 as the first national women's soccer league, originally designed to provide a professional outlet for women in the United States and other parts of the world from 1980 onwards. The first major achievement for women's football in North America was the Women's Open in 1996.
